There are several folk who take the bible at face value. And none can be more true than the Pharisee’s who were the non secular teachers of law at the time when the person Christ Jesus was on earth. They knew the scripture off by heart, they poured over them with spiritual zeal.
Yet they misinterpreted the message, thinking themselves higher than the rest of the people. That is the reason why they prayed out loud in the synagogue and put on a show, and made sure everyone seen them place their offering in the basket.
But their biggest mistake was that they followed the Law of Moses to a T but didn't recognise the one it referred to. They held Moses in high esteem, but didn't care much for the Messiah. They only held onto the scriptures because they wanted the benefits of long life, but they were far from God in their ways and in their hearts.
Sadly a lot of Jews didn't and still did not recognize Jesus as the Messiah. That’s due to the fact they were rigorously following all the practices of the law, and failing badly at that. That's why it had been prophesised by Moses and John the Baptist that Jesus was coming to get rid of the law. He alone would have the power that Moses and John didn't.
Moses never said to the people I command this sea to part in the name of Moses. He probably did everything in the name of The Lord God. But the people held onto their laws and customs and were happier that what they were doing was right, instead of excepting who God was.
And leading on to the query should the bible be taken literally? Well plenty of the bible speaks vis prediction, narrative, and poetry. John as an example is the only Gospel that digs into the meaning behind Jesus ‘ works and does not concentrate just on the events.
But as Jesus the Lord said himself, I have got a bigger testimony than me, my works and miracles. And if as he claimed you do not believe me for my works alone what hope is there for you. The thing a lot of folks fail to appreciate or grasp is that Jesus satisfied each prediction that was written and spoken about him by the prophets in the Old Testament.
So how could he not be who he said he was? Hundreds and legions of people accounted for his miracles. Yet scientists talk about an age that existed in principle millions of years ago. All without fact, yet claimed as fact.
